How to generate lorem ipsum

Three controls: how much text, which words it comes from, and what shape it leaves in.

  1. Say how much you need

    Type a number and choose what it counts: paragraphs, sentences, words, list items or bytes. Word mode lands on the figure exactly — ask for 250 and you get 250, where a generator that stops at the end of a sentence would hand you 247 or 261. Byte mode fills a size budget instead, which is what you want when the question is whether a database column or a meta description survives its limit.

  2. Pick a word list and an output format

    Classic Latin is the default; Corporate, Engineering and Plain English are there for mockups where Latin would be answered with “is the text broken?”. Switch Output to HTML and paragraphs arrive inside <p> tags, list items inside <li> within a <ul>, indented two spaces with no classes attached. Untick the opener when a screenshot should not announce itself with the words everyone recognises.

  3. Copy, download, or keep the seed

    Copy takes the whole block; Download saves lorem-ipsum.txt, or lorem-ipsum.html when HTML output is on. The number in the Seed box is what produced the text on screen — Regenerate rolls a new one, and typing an old seed back reproduces that draw word for word, which is how you get the same placeholder text into a second mockup a week later.

Frequently asked questions

Why is placeholder text written in Latin?

Because Latin carries no meaning for the people reviewing a layout, so nobody stops to argue with the copy while they are judging the design. The passage has the added property of behaving like English on the page: its letter frequencies and word lengths are close enough that a block of it occupies roughly the space the real text will, which is not true of repeating the same English sentence or filling the column with x characters.

Does lorem ipsum hurt SEO?

Only when it reaches a URL a crawler can see. In a design file, a staging build or a Storybook story it is invisible to search engines and costs nothing. On a live page it is thin content that gets indexed as-is, and the check takes ten seconds: search site:yourdomain.com "lorem ipsum" and see whether anything comes back. Enough production sites fail that check that it is worth running before every launch.

How many words of lorem ipsum fill a page?

About 500 words for a double-spaced A4 or Letter page at 12pt, and 250 to 300 for the same page single-spaced. Three paragraphs from this generator average 230 words, five average 378, and nine runs out of ten land between 330 and 425 for five paragraphs. On screen the more useful measure is the line: a 65-character measure holds about eleven words, so a 600-pixel column at 16px takes roughly 75 characters a line.

Is lorem ipsum real Latin, and what does it say?

It is corrupted Latin rather than a sentence anyone wrote. The source is section 1.10.32 of Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, which opens “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet” — roughly, “nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain”. Lorem is the tail of dolorem, left behind when a line break cut the word in half, and centuries of resetting added words such as zzril and aliquip that appear in no Latin dictionary.

How do I get placeholder text with the HTML tags already around it?

Switch Output to HTML and each paragraph comes back inside <p>…</p>, or each entry inside <li>…</li> within a <ul> when the unit is set to list items. The markup carries no classes, no inline styles and no wrapper div, so it drops into a template without importing a stylesheet's worth of assumptions. Download then saves lorem-ipsum.html instead of a .txt file.

Can I generate an exact number of words?

Yes — set the unit to Words and the total is exact. The last sentence is built to land on the number rather than run past it, and when the remainder would leave a stub of one to three words those words are folded into the previous sentence instead, so you never get a two-word sentence at the end. Sentences and paragraphs stay their natural lengths everywhere before that point.

Will the same settings produce the same text twice?

Yes, as long as the seed is the same. The generator runs a seeded mulberry32 PRNG rather than Math.random, so the seed together with the unit, count and word list fixes every word — the same four inputs return a byte-identical block on any machine. Press Regenerate for a new seed when you want a different draw, and note the old one down if you might want that exact text back.

About lorem ipsum

The passage has a paper trail. Richard McClintock, a Latin lecturer at Hampden-Sydney College, traced the standard text in the 1980s to sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a treatise on ethics Cicero wrote in 45 BC; the thread he pulled was consectetur, a word rare enough that searching a Latin corpus for it gives one answer. Its modern career began in typesetting supplies rather than in publishing — Letraset printed lorem ipsum on dry-transfer lettering sheets in the 1960s, and Aldus put it into PageMaker templates two decades later, which is how a scrambled Roman philosopher ended up inside every design tool shipped since.

What makes it work is statistical, not literary. Latin word lengths and letter frequencies sit close enough to English that a block takes up about the room the real copy will, while staying unreadable enough that a reviewer looks at the layout instead of rewriting the headline. The place most generators fall down is rhythm: they draw sentence lengths from a flat random range, or repeat one canned paragraph, and the result is a wall of near-identical blocks that no real article produces. Each sentence length here is the average of three random draws, which puts most sentences at 13 to 15 words with rare four- and twenty-four-word outliers, and paragraphs vary between three and eight sentences — a ragged right edge that reads as writing.

Placeholder prose is rarely the only fake data a mockup needs. Tabular screens want plausible rows, which is what the table generator is for, and lists of records want identifiers that look real — a batch from the UUID generator is far more convincing than user-1, user-2, user-3. Two habits are worth keeping. Use the byte unit when the question is whether a field survives its column limit rather than how it looks: at 6.45 characters per Latin word, a 1,024-byte run comes out around 135 words. And turn the classic opener off before a screenshot goes to a client, because a reader who spots Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet reads the entire image as unfinished.
